Why a private car makes sense on this route
Kardzhali has no direct train from Sofia, and the coach means getting from the airport to the bus station first, then three to four hours with the crate in the luggage hold or on your lap. Breaks happen on the timetable, not when your dog needs one. A private transfer starts in the arrivals hall, follows the motorway east past Plovdiv, stops whenever the animal needs it and ends at your gate – in town or in a village up in the hills.
Who books it
The Eastern Rhodopes around Kardzhali and the area south of Haskovo are quiet and green, and quite a few people from abroad own or rent a house in the villages there. Others come back to visit family, or arrive to stay for months with the dog that lives with them. Visitors also come for Perperikon, the hilltop archaeological site near Kardzhali, and for the lakes of the Arda valley. All of them land in Sofia – and for the last leg with a pet, a car door to door is simply easier.
Three hours or more with a dog: keeping it calm
- Let the dog stretch first. After a flight, a short walk on the lead outside the terminal helps a lot – tell the driver and he will wait.
- Water and a bowl in the cabin, not in the boot.
- A break about halfway. Mention it when you book and the driver will stop at a fuel station on the motorway. Clip the lead on before the door opens.
- The last part to Kardzhali is a mountain road with more bends. A dog that gets car sick does better with a light meal several hours before, not just before the trip.
- Never leave the animal alone in the car, even for a minute in the shade.
Cats on the road
Keep the cat inside its carrier for the whole drive, do not open it during a stop and cover the carrier with a light blanket if your cat is nervous. A cat that slips out at an unfamiliar car park can disappear in seconds.
Crate, carrier and which vehicle to book
Your pet travels in your own crate or carrier (Terms and Conditions, item 50.4). It should be big enough for the animal to stand, turn and lie down. Tell us its rough size and how big the dog is, and we will send the right car:
- Sedan – up to 4 passengers, a cat or small dog in a soft carrier, normal luggage.
- Minivan – up to 6 passengers; a large dog in a rigid crate, or a family with lots of suitcases.
- Van – up to 8 passengers; several animals, a group, or a move with boxes.
Arriving at Sofia Airport with your pet
Send us your flight number. We track it, and if the plane is late we simply wait – no time limit and no extra charge. The driver can hold a sign with your name and speaks English. Pet documents and airline rules are your part; for the airport side, see our page on the Sofia Airport transfer with a dog. Going only part of the way? See the Sofia to Pazardzhik taxi with a dog.
Our rules for pets
We carry pets only together with their owner or a person looking after them. The crate or carrier is yours. When you book, tell us what animal you travel with and how big it is – the operator confirms the vehicle and the final price. No prepayment: you pay the driver after the ride.
