Who takes this route with a pet?
Sofia and Skopje are only a few hours apart, but there is no simple way to cross between them with an animal. There is no direct passenger train, buses have their own rules for pets and are not always willing to take a large dog, and there are few direct flights. So the people who call us for this trip are often in a similar situation: a family moving to or from North Macedonia with their dog, someone who has landed at Sofia Airport and needs to reach Skopje with a cat in the cabin bag, or a couple visiting relatives over the holidays who would rather not leave their pet behind.
In a private car the animal stays next to you the whole way. The car is booked only for you, so a family with luggage and one or two pets pays one price for the vehicle, and the driver stops when your dog needs a break.
Which way does the car go from Sofia to Skopje?
This is a shorter trip than the drives to Istanbul or Bucharest, but the road is more varied. The car leaves Sofia to the west, past Pernik and Radomir, and then turns south to Kyustendil. After Kyustendil the road climbs towards the border. The Bulgarian checkpoint, Gyueshevo, sits on a mountain pass; on the other side the checkpoint is called Deve Bair.
From the border the road winds down through many bends to Kriva Palanka, follows the valley to Kumanovo and from there continues on the motorway into Skopje. The driver takes you to the exact address – home, hotel or office.
- Distance: about 250 km
- Driving time: about 4 hours, plus border and breaks
- Border: Gyueshevo (Bulgaria) – Deve Bair (North Macedonia)
- Good to know: a mountain section with bends on both sides of the border
Will your dog or cat cope with the mountain bends?
Many animals that are perfectly calm on a motorway feel the bends more. On this route a little preparation makes a real difference:
- A light meal. Do not give your pet a big meal in the few hours before you leave – an empty stomach handles the bends better.
- A crate that does not slide. Place the crate or carrier so that it cannot move when the car turns, for example on the floor behind a front seat if it is small. The driver will help you settle it.
- Tell us if your pet gets car sick. Mention it when you book. The driver will take the mountain sections gently and stop whenever needed.
- Keep bags and a towel at hand. If the animal does feel unwell, you will want them in the cabin, not in the boot.
How long is the wait at Gyueshevo – Deve Bair?
Gyueshevo is a smaller crossing than Kalotina or Kapitan Andreevo. On an ordinary day the crossing is often quick, but on public holidays and at the start and end of school holidays the queue can grow. North Macedonia is not in the EU, so there are checks on both sides of the border.
While you wait, the dog stays in the car, in its crate, which is why we plan a walk near Kyustendil before the climb to the pass. A cat should stay in its closed carrier, especially when doors and windows are opened for the checks. The checkpoint is high in the mountains, so in the colder months it is noticeably cooler there than in Sofia – bring a blanket to cover the crate.
What should you check before taking your pet to North Macedonia?
North Macedonia sets its own conditions for bringing dogs and cats into the country, and they can change. Before you travel, check the current requirements with the official institutions of North Macedonia and talk to your vet early, so nothing is left to the last few days.
We do not advise on specific rules and do not check anything for your pet – our job is the journey. What we take care of is a car that fits your crate, a calm drive and stops whenever your pet needs one.
Where can your dog stretch its legs on the way?
With about four hours on the road, one longer break is usually enough; a young or restless dog may need two:
- Around Kyustendil. About an hour to an hour and a half from Sofia, before the climb to the border. This is the best place for a proper walk, because the mountain and the checkpoint come next.
- Around Kriva Palanka. After the descent from the pass many dogs need to move. The driver will find a place to stop away from the main road.
- Before Skopje. If your dog is unsettled in the last hour, tell the driver – there are petrol stations with parking around Kumanovo.
Keep your dog on a lead at every stop: the mountain road has steep verges and petrol stations are busy with cars.
Landing at Sofia Airport and heading to Skopje?
If you arrive in Sofia by plane with your pet, we can meet you at the airport and drive you straight to Skopje, without going through the city first. Send us your flight number when you book; if the flight is late, the waiting is free. The price for this trip is in the table above.
Which vehicle suits your pet and its crate?
We have a large fleet of sedans, minivans, vans and S/E-Class cars. When you book, tell us the type and size of the animal and the size of the crate, so the dispatcher can choose the right car:
- Sedan – up to 4 passengers; fine for a cat or a small dog in a carrier.
- Minivan – up to 6 passengers; for a medium or large crate or more luggage.
- Van – up to 8 passengers; for a big dog in a big crate, two animals or a house move.
- S/E-Class – a quieter, roomier car for a small pet in a carrier.
The crate or carrier is provided by you (our Terms, point 50.4) – we do not supply them. Child seats are free of charge.

Frequently asked questions
Is the price to the centre of Skopje or to Skopje Airport?
The price in the calculator and the table is to an address in Skopje. Skopje International Airport lies about 20 km east of the city, so if you are flying from there, give us your flight time and the dispatcher will confirm the price for the airport.
Which border crossing do we use with our dog?
Gyueshevo on the Bulgarian side, which is Deve Bair on the North Macedonian side, west of Kyustendil. It is the shortest way from Sofia to Skopje.
Our dog gets car sick. Is this route difficult?
The road climbs and descends through mountains on both sides of the border, so there are more bends than on a motorway. Feed your dog lightly before the trip and tell us when you book; the driver will drive smoothly through the bends and stop whenever it is needed.
How long does the trip take?
About 4 hours of driving for roughly 250 km, plus the border and one or two walks for your dog. In snow the mountain section is slower.
Who is responsible for our cat’s entry requirements for North Macedonia?
You, as the owner. The requirements are set by the authorities of North Macedonia and can change, so check them with the official institutions and your vet before the trip. We provide the transport only.
Can our dog travel to Skopje without us?
No. We carry pets only together with their owner, in the owner’s own crate or carrier.
Can you take us from Skopje back to Sofia or to Sofia Airport?
Yes. The price for the return direction is in the table on this page. For a drop-off at Sofia Airport, mention it when you book and the dispatcher will confirm the price.
