From Sofia to Thessaloniki it is about 295 km, around 3 h 45 min plus the border crossing. Coaches to Greece rarely take pets, and flying with an animal means special bookings and approved crates. With YesTrans you ride with your pet in a private car – from your door in Sofia to your hotel, apartment or Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia”.

How the trip with your dog works

  1. Booking. Call, message us on Viber or WhatsApp, or book online. Tell us your pickup address in Sofia, your destination in Thessaloniki, the time, how many people are travelling and what pet is coming with you.
  2. Confirmation. The dispatcher confirms the vehicle based on your crate and luggage. You see the price in the calculator and pay after the ride.
  3. Pickup at your door. The driver comes to your entrance – no carrying the crate through a bus station or the metro.
  4. The route. We take the Struma motorway via Pernik, Dupnitsa, Blagoevgrad and Sandanski, cross the border at Kulata – Promachonas and continue on the Greek motorway to Thessaloniki.
  5. Breaks. We stop whenever your dog needs it – usually once or twice, at a petrol station with a grassy area.
  6. Arrival. We drop you at your door in Thessaloniki, at a hotel, the port or the airport.

Breaks and water on the way

The drive to Thessaloniki is long enough to need at least one proper break. Good spots are around Blagoevgrad and Sandanski – your dog can walk on a lead, drink and stretch before the border. On the Greek side there are also roadside service areas with green spaces.

Offer water at every stop, but not too much at once. In summer, leave early in the morning or in the evening – the car is air-conditioned, but car parks heat up fast and hot asphalt can burn paws. Never leave your pet alone in the car in the sun, even for a few minutes.

Cats usually prefer to stay in their carrier during the trip. Offer some water inside the carrier and let them rest – most cats fall asleep after the first hour.

How to prepare your dog or cat

  • A walk before departure. 15–20 minutes outside before getting in the car calms your dog and means fewer stops in the first hours.
  • A light meal. Do not feed your pet a full meal for a few hours before the trip. Do not withhold water.
  • Water and a bowl. Bring a bottle of water and a collapsible bowl – we offer water to your dog at every stop.
  • Familiar things. A blanket, cushion or toy from home in the crate helps your pet settle.
  • Cats stay in the carrier. Keep your cat in a closed carrier for the whole journey, including during stops.
  • Lead and collar. Your dog should always be on a lead when getting out – petrol stations are busy places.
  • Bags and wipes. Pack a small cleaning kit in case your pet is sick on the way.

Which vehicle you get

Our fleet includes around 200 sedans, 50 minivans, 100 vans and 20 S- and E-class cars. When you book, tell us what pet is travelling with you, roughly how big it is and how it will travel – in a carrier or a crate. The dispatcher will then suggest the right vehicle:

  • Sedan – for a cat or a small dog in a carrier and up to three passengers with normal luggage.
  • Minivan – for a larger crate or more people and suitcases.
  • Van – for a big dog in a big crate, two pets or a family with lots of luggage.
  • S/E class – a quieter car, when your pet travels in a carrier or a small crate.

The crate or carrier is yours (General Terms, item 50.4) – we do not provide them. Child seats are free of charge if you travel with children.

What to pack for your pet

  • your crate or carrier;
  • lead, collar or harness with a tag showing your phone number;
  • water, a collapsible bowl and a little food for arrival;
  • a blanket or mat your pet is used to;
  • poop bags, wet wipes and paper towels;
  • any medication your pet takes;
  • your pet’s documents for the trip abroad.

The crate should be big enough for your pet to stand up and turn around. If your dog is not used to a crate, leave it open at home for a few days before the trip so it can get used to it.

Your pet’s documents

Your pet’s documents (passport, vaccinations, microchip and so on) are the owner’s responsibility – we provide the ride. General background is available in our Bulgarian-language articles on the pet passport for dogs and cats and on documents for travelling to the UK with a dog or cat. Rules change from time to time, so before you travel please check the current requirements with official sources and your vet.

We do not check or issue any documents. The driver takes you to your chosen address; preparing your pet for travel abroad remains the owner’s responsibility.

Why a private car instead of a coach or a plane

  • Your pet stays with you – no cargo hold and no separation at any point.
  • Door to door – no bus station in Sofia and no taxi from the station in Thessaloniki.
  • Leave when it suits you – we work 24/7, including early-morning and night rides.
  • Stop when your dog needs to – not according to a timetable.
  • More luggage – the bed, food, bowls and crate all come with you.
  • Pay after the ride – no prepayment and no deposit.

Thessaloniki with a dog – what to expect

Thessaloniki has a long seafront promenade where many locals walk their dogs in the morning and evening. If you are renting an apartment, check with your host that pets are welcome and whether there are any size limits. If you are continuing to Halkidiki or flying out of Thessaloniki Airport, tell us when you book – we can plan it as one trip without changing cars.

For the return journey, book the ride from Thessaloniki back to Sofia or Sofia Airport. If your plans change, just call us – we work around the clock and you always pay after the ride.
