From Burgas to Varna it is about 130 km – roughly 2 hours 15 minutes by car. This road links the two biggest cities on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and its two airports. Which road does the transfer take from Burgas to Varna?
The road runs north along the coast: Burgas – the turn-off for Pomorie – Sunny Beach – Obzor – Byala – Varna. After Sunny Beach it crosses the eastern end of the Balkan Mountains, with a climb, forest and plenty of bends. After Obzor the road straightens out again and continues past Byala and Staro Oryahovo to the Asparuhov Bridge in Varna.
- Summer Saturdays. Expect queues around Sunny Beach and on the Asparuhov Bridge. Add 20–30 minutes.
- A break. If you would like a coffee or a short stop, just tell the driver – there are petrol stations and cafés along the way.
- Bends. Some people feel car-sick on the mountain section. Let the driver know and he will drive more gently.
Can I land at Burgas Airport and go straight to Varna?
Yes, and many people do. Quite often a flight to Varna is more expensive or has no convenient time, while there is a good one to Burgas.
