The road from Sofia to Plovdiv
From the centre of Sofia the driver heads east to the Trakia motorway, which runs south-east across the Thracian plain all the way to Plovdiv. The road is fast and modern, with petrol stations and cafés along the way if you want a short break. On a clear day you can see the Rila mountains to the south and the Balkan range to the north.
Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe and was European Capital of Culture in 2019. The Old Town with its Roman theatre, the Kapana district full of small bars and galleries, and the long pedestrian main street are all close together.
